I'm in Shanghai!

Yup, for those who are still outdated, I've moved to Shanghai for the next 6 months. Been meaning to write a lot more. But considering the number of reports overdue, blogging isn't top priority. Though i'll just post a few pics of where I'm staying. Hopefully you'll then feel sorry for me, and send care packages. =) Front of apartment My backyard Oh, and I made my own bed too Changing this To this

Maturing

Carefree days, careless laughter, roguish grin, the wicket twinkle in the eye, those were the default features I used to wear. Taking pride in being lame, bringing laughter everywhere i go, that's what i was known for.

Now, it has been over 2 years since i've sat with friends, reeling off joke after joke. In fact, the cheeky, mischievous guy has almost disappeared. He has now been replaced with one much too serious, brow constantly scrunched up in a frown, with a smile that mirrors an eclipse. Rarely occurs, and when it does, it doesn't last long.

I hear someone mentioned that i've changed a lot, he then said, 'it seems like Jonathan is maturing'.

If this is what growing up is all about, I rather stay a kid.

The rain that falls

Oops, seems like AGES since I posted here.

Sorry people, just too much to write, too little energy / time + can't be bothered.

and Yue Yi : I MAILED YOU AND YOU NEVER REPLIED.

Anyway, just another one of those things I write when I'm bored.

The sun was setting, its final rays of light desperately fighting off the encroaching darkness. It was a losing battle, not only was each ray of light slowly pushed back into oblivion, dark clouds were also surrounding them, a silent promise of victory over the light in which would be soon celebrated with a torrent of rain.

He sat alone, watching the battle unfold before his very eyes. Yet the events of grand majestic seem to have little effect upon him. The little he did was to draw similarities of the encroaching clouds upon his own mood. As he sat there, he silently reflected upon the events just past. Like the clouds, they were dark; just as the dying light gallantly continued to press on, trying to pierce through a single ray of light before it died, he tried to shed some light through his own clouded emotions.

He fingered the diamond encrusted ring on his finger, caressing its circular shape. The ring, the ring that was a symbol of promise, a symbol of hope, and a symbol of joy to come; so perfect in shape, a promise of a never ending cycle of love, was but a deception. He knew, no matter what the ring stood for, he was now at the end of the circle. An end, so abrupt that its edges gouge huge chunks of flesh out with its razor sharp edges, it was painful even to him – the one whom others referred to as the man who felt no pain.

She had meant the world to him, it was no secret. He had told his friends about her, they had laughed at him. They said they could not imagine it! He, the epitome of the Alpha Male, has finally fallen for someone? ‘No’ they had said. They could not imagine his hard-bitten nature turning mild towards another. They had seen him in action, fighting tooth and nail, and shredding blood like water when the situation required. Their mental image of him encompasses of his face set in stone, teeth gritted, pursuing his objectives. Yet, they were secretly jealous. They knew that if indeed she was the one, he would turn himself against anything that dared to harm her, baring his all to protect her, and she would forever be safe.

However, as he sat there, the image of him seeing her in another man’s arms seared his soul.

In perfect symmetry to his emotions, the rain started to fall. It fell slowly, drop by drop, slowly but surely littering every exposed surface with tiny pools of water until they had covered every surface with a blanket of moisture. Never once did he flinch as each droplet of water stung his skin. Soon they were dripping from his hair and flowing across his skin, each drop of water looked beseechingly into his forlorn eyes, offering to slowly wash his sorrows away. A moment of hope flickered behind his eyes, a wild hope that these little droplets might somehow find away to ease the pain he felt within; but as the droplets tried to penetrate his callous skin, he knew they were battling in vain.

No matter how hard he tried, he could not bring himself to blame her, much less hate her. She had indeed wronged him greatly, so much easier it would have been for him to blame her, to channel anger and frustration towards her, but strangely he could not. All he could feel was a dull ache every time he thought of her, with a hint of disappointment from the betrayal of his trust towards her.  She had meant too much to him, she still did. No matter how he felt towards her, he still wished for her to be happy. Even if it meant that he had to lose her for him to achieve his objective, he knew that he would accept it. Although accepting it would not ease the conflict of emotions he felt, he knew he would let go.

He knew that he was partly the reason that she had left him. He could never have provided her with the security she needed. Afraid of ever hurting her, he never promised her anything that he might not be able to deliver; with him constantly being on the move, there was so little he could promise her. The short moments they spent together had seemed so perfect; but the occurrences were few, and the occasions rare. Each time they met, there was so much more he wanted to tell her, to promise her, to reassure her, but he was never sure of when he might ever see her again. He remained silent during those moments; it was unfair to keep her hanging that way. He could not expect her to fall in love with potential; he knew she could never do that, and he refused to let her. If she did, there was too much possibility that she might end up hurt.

Somehow, he knew when he returned to see her in another’s arms, it was inevitable.

The rain had become to fall heavily, mercilessly beating down on who stood in its way. As passersby hurried on to safety, he remained rooted to his seat letting the rain wash over him, silently praying that somehow these tiny droplets would find a way to clear his emotions. Those that passed by always spared a moment to take in the strange sight that evening, the solitary figure, sitting alone in the rain, the sight of an invulnerable giant, so completely vulnerable.

As the rain and tears mingled, he knew it takes a real man to cry.

Greetings from China
